Fall Fairy Renaissance Faire Costume 2024

This year I decided to embark on a journey of textiles. I started in January, attempting to teach myself how to crochet, and that turned into crocheting an entire skirt and buying a sewing machine in order to make the rest of a fall fairy costume for the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire.

The pumpkin stitch skirt, pumpkin bag, bodysuit and matching shorts, and the green corset were all handmade by me, mostly self taught using videos on the internet and a lot of trial and error. The entire look was inspired by the black and orange flower crown I purchased at the Ren Faire in 2023. I used purchased patterns to create the bodysuit and the corset.

The pumpkin skirt was inspired by a video I saw on Youtube by a creator called MUSHYY and I used some scrap leather to add a phone pocket and waistband. This same leather was then used to create a cross-body strap for my pumpkin bag. The pumpkin handbag was designed and created entirely by me and my very limited knowledge of crochet. I used wire to build a frame and then crocheted around it using a variety of stitches until it started to take the shape I was looking for. I then added a fabric lining inside and a sturdy base made out of thick cardboard and scrap leather.

As my very first true foray into costuming/textiles, I am very pleased with the outcome of this project. It taught me many new skills and introduced me to new mediums. I look forward to wearing this costume again next year and potentially designing another one for 2025.

Haunted Birdhouse

I was given an unfinished birdhouse by a friend and immediately saw it as an old haunted house. The angled roof and the narrow base of the house felt like the perfect silhouette. I started by painting the house a dark charcoal grey, then I added details with a black posca paint pen and white acrylic paint. The base was a stray piece of wood that I covered in green craft sand. The extra additions such as the pumpkin, the walkway, the fence, the wreath, and even the clown were random craft materials I found in my stash and decided to give a new life. Specifically, the clown which started out as gnome figurine until I painted it to mimic my 2022 Halloween costume. This haunted birdhouse was completed by drilling a small hole into the back panel and feeding in a string of warm white lights to glow through the opening on the front.

This piece went through many phases before it ended up as this finished product. Not to mention the life it had before it ever came to be in my possession. When I received this birdhouse it was painted red and still had pencil lines from whatever the original design plan was.

When I began working on the house, I initially painted it black and used gold and white paint pens to draw on details that I decided later on, did not truly fit the vision I had in my head. So I simply repainted it, found some new inspiration, some new materials, and ended up with the not so scary but still definitely haunted house you see here.

Inktober 2022

For Inktober 2022, I decided to write my own prompt list. For all 31 days of October, I chose to draw a ghost dressed up in different Halloween costumes. This was my first time writing my own list and my first time completing the Inktober challenge on time by the end of the month. Each drawing for Inktober 2022 was done on a blank white greeting card. I wanted these drawings to be fun renditions of my iconic ghost symbol, reflecting both a simple art style and a more light-hearted aspect of Halloween: silly costumes!

I have always loved Halloween and have been attempting to complete the Inktober challenge since I was in High School. I often times feel stumped by the official prompt lists which is why this year I’ve chosen to create my own inspiration. Ghosts are one of my favorite icons of Halloween, I have an entire shelf dedicated to ghost artwork, figures, and even candles! It only felt right to use these ghosts as source material for this series of drawings. While committing to creating a piece of art every day for a month is quite challenging, I look forward to trying again next year with a new set of prompts.

Artist Showcase: Dark Arts 2022

This year’s Dark Arts Show was another fun themed display at the Quakertown Farmer’s Market, made perfect by great art and awesome costumes! A huge thanks to everyone that came out to support the local talent, to all the other artists for making the showcase what it was, and to Small Media Large for hosting. An extra thanks to my dad and boyfriend for helping with set-up, clean-up, and keeping me company throughout the two day long set up.

Fishbowl Jack-O-Lantern

A whimsical take on the standard jack-o-lantern featuring one of my favorite things to paint: goldfish. I loved the idea of a pumpkin being carved for something other than just a candle. And though it’s not very practical, I think it would be really fun to see something like this in real life.

Dive In

Inspired by Pierce The Veil’s song “Dive In”, this painting aims to capture the feeling that song gives me as well as illustrating some of the lyrics directly.

This artwork was created on a canvas that contained a pre-existing but scrapped painting of mine from school. By doing this, I was able to utilize the painting surface for a new concept.
