Fall Fairy Renaissance Faire Costume 2024

This year I decided to embark on a journey of textiles. I started in January, attempting to teach myself how to crochet, and that turned into crocheting an entire skirt and buying a sewing machine in order to make the rest of a fall fairy costume for the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire.

The pumpkin stitch skirt, pumpkin bag, bodysuit and matching shorts, and the green corset were all handmade by me, mostly self taught using videos on the internet and a lot of trial and error. The entire look was inspired by the black and orange flower crown I purchased at the Ren Faire in 2023. I used purchased patterns to create the bodysuit and the corset.

The pumpkin skirt was inspired by a video I saw on Youtube by a creator called MUSHYY and I used some scrap leather to add a phone pocket and waistband. This same leather was then used to create a cross-body strap for my pumpkin bag. The pumpkin handbag was designed and created entirely by me and my very limited knowledge of crochet. I used wire to build a frame and then crocheted around it using a variety of stitches until it started to take the shape I was looking for. I then added a fabric lining inside and a sturdy base made out of thick cardboard and scrap leather.

As my very first true foray into costuming/textiles, I am very pleased with the outcome of this project. It taught me many new skills and introduced me to new mediums. I look forward to wearing this costume again next year and potentially designing another one for 2025.

Tri-Sundae-Tops

I found this ceramic dinosaur in the clearance section of a craft store without any horns. So I took him home and brought him to his full potential as a tri-sundae-tops. I formed new horns out of polymer clay before priming the entire piece. A new paint job, some more clay embellishments, and a glossy spray sealer was all it took to bring him back to life. It was fun experimenting with different materials as I tried to mimic the elements of a real ice cream sundae.

This has been one of my favorite projects so far this year. Being able to take something that has been passed over for it’s flaws, and turn it into something that people love again is such a wonderful part of the creative process. For me, creating a Tri-Sundae-Tops was a no brainer. I looked at that broken orange dinosaur and immediately saw it’s potential. Maybe it’s my love for food, or simply a passing thought, but I could not imagine this dinosaur as being anything other than a walking ice cream sundae. It was a slightly stressful process at times as I wasn’t always sure how to achieve the look I was going for. I took my time and did many trial runs of various materials until I settled on what I thought my best options were. Honestly, I could not be happier with how this piece turned out and I will proudly say that I’ve given this dino friend a loving home on my shelf. Maybe one day it will be joined by even more dessert themed members of it’s dinosaur family.

Gummy Sharks

I’ve been inspired by the Pantone card painting videos I’ve seen online to start painting on colored surfaces. Specifically, to paint on some left over color aid paper I have from a college class. This is the first of many monochrome paintings I plan on doing. I chose the color aid sheet in the color B-S1, a bright almost cerulean blue. My paint pallet consisted exclusively of black, white, and ultramarine blue which I used to create an image of gummy sharks in a more painterly style.

Half Self Portrait

This painting was a self implemented test of my skills working with oil paint in portraiture. I had done some smaller oil portraits in a more painterly style but wanted to try my hand at a more photo realistic approach. And while this still has far to go to truly be photo realistic I’m happy with the progress I’ve made in this medium and look forward to more progress in the future.

Reckless Driving

Reckless Driving is a piece inspired by the song of that title by Lizzy McAlpine. It originally started as a painting I began many years ago and was just now attempting to finish. I had been listening to the song and the silhouette from the music video kept appearing in my mind so I put it to paper. The geometric shapes seem to shatter, starting from the figure and spiraling out. It felt fitting for a song about crashing and falling apart.

Fishbowl Jack-O-Lantern

A whimsical take on the standard jack-o-lantern featuring one of my favorite things to paint: goldfish. I loved the idea of a pumpkin being carved for something other than just a candle. And though it’s not very practical, I think it would be really fun to see something like this in real life.

Cherry Girl

Inspired by my recent cherry themed birthday festivities, this portrait comes mostly from my imagination. This piece did not end up being what I had initially envisioned though I like this end result much more. I wanted to focus on brush strokes more than realism and in general, I wanted this to be a fun painting. I accomplished this by not blending any of the colors and using basic imagery to create recognizable motifs throughout the piece. With a solid black outline and some extra details, this cherry girl truly came to life.

Frog Bowling Ball Lawn Ornament

My customer requested that I recycle one of their old bowling balls into a frog to display in their garden. I used not only the bowling ball but also two large plastic baseballs to create eyes for this amphibian friend. After some sanding, painting, and sealing, this little guy was ready to join the garden.

Bad Habits

Bad Habits is inspired by the question “what bad habits would you like to break?”, this piece explores my own personal habit of ripping at my fingernails. I wanted this piece to be an honest reflection of my imperfections and I settled on this specific subject matter as a way to hold myself accountable for the results. I exaggerated the torn up fingers to represent the constant ripping at my own body and how prominent those small details are to my own eyes. Sometimes for change to occur, you must first see the problem for what it is.
