Inktober 2022

For Inktober 2022, I decided to write my own prompt list. For all 31 days of October, I chose to draw a ghost dressed up in different Halloween costumes. This was my first time writing my own list and my first time completing the Inktober challenge on time by the end of the month. Each drawing for Inktober 2022 was done on a blank white greeting card. I wanted these drawings to be fun renditions of my iconic ghost symbol, reflecting both a simple art style and a more light-hearted aspect of Halloween: silly costumes!

I have always loved Halloween and have been attempting to complete the Inktober challenge since I was in High School. I often times feel stumped by the official prompt lists which is why this year I’ve chosen to create my own inspiration. Ghosts are one of my favorite icons of Halloween, I have an entire shelf dedicated to ghost artwork, figures, and even candles! It only felt right to use these ghosts as source material for this series of drawings. While committing to creating a piece of art every day for a month is quite challenging, I look forward to trying again next year with a new set of prompts.

Fishbowl Jack-O-Lantern

A whimsical take on the standard jack-o-lantern featuring one of my favorite things to paint: goldfish. I loved the idea of a pumpkin being carved for something other than just a candle. And though it’s not very practical, I think it would be really fun to see something like this in real life.

Cherry Girl

Inspired by my recent cherry themed birthday festivities, this portrait comes mostly from my imagination. This piece did not end up being what I had initially envisioned though I like this end result much more. I wanted to focus on brush strokes more than realism and in general, I wanted this to be a fun painting. I accomplished this by not blending any of the colors and using basic imagery to create recognizable motifs throughout the piece. With a solid black outline and some extra details, this cherry girl truly came to life.

Bedroom Window Sunset

Every once in a while, the sky outside my bedroom devolves into warm glowing pinks, reds, and oranges. Usually I take a few minutes to photograph these moments but this time I used watercolors and ink to create a loose interpretation of the view from my window.

Dive In

Inspired by Pierce The Veil’s song “Dive In”, this painting aims to capture the feeling that song gives me as well as illustrating some of the lyrics directly.

This artwork was created on a canvas that contained a pre-existing but scrapped painting of mine from school. By doing this, I was able to utilize the painting surface for a new concept.

Bad Habits

Bad Habits is inspired by the question “what bad habits would you like to break?”, this piece explores my own personal habit of ripping at my fingernails. I wanted this piece to be an honest reflection of my imperfections and I settled on this specific subject matter as a way to hold myself accountable for the results. I exaggerated the torn up fingers to represent the constant ripping at my own body and how prominent those small details are to my own eyes. Sometimes for change to occur, you must first see the problem for what it is.

Fishbowls

Inspired by these lightbulb jars at the store, I turned them into a mini fishbowls. Each glass is hand painted with a different goldfish. Inside is filled with different colored craft sand and faux plants to mimic the inside of an aquarium.

Digital Self Portrait

Based on a photo of myself, I drew a digital self portrait with the program Krita. I used faded lines to create a loose background and solid block colors to made the figure stand out.
