Cheesecake

Cheesecake was inspired by the color pallet of a piece of cheesecake I enjoyed one random Thursday evening. The stark contrast between the vanilla colored cake and the chocolate sauce I drizzled on top paired with the silver fork seemed very picturesque to me. I had been focusing on my monochromatic color aid paintings at the time and could picture this image on top of a deep chocolatey brown background.

While I did not initially intend to make all these monochromatic paintings about food, I have found a lot of inspiration from the simple imagery and color schemes of a lot of food items. Both Gummy Sharks and Valentine’s Candy were ideas I had in my head and found references for online. The more I continue with this series of paintings, the more references I acquire in my real life, finding inspiration from simple things I enjoy.

Valentine’s Day Candy

Valentine’s Day Candy is a color aid painting done on a hot pink background. This time, I chose a pile of foil wrapped chocolate hearts for my reference. Again, sticking to that more painterly style, I didn’t blend the colors too much, instead leaving blocks and lines to help give the illusion of crinkled foil.

Orange Creamsicle

Orange Creamsicle is another monochrome painting done on color aid paper. This time I chose a pastel orange which was the perfect backdrop for a slice of orange creamsicle cake, complete with gummy oranges and a golden fork. Once again, I did this is a more painterly style as opposed to hyper realism. This helps the piece be more cohesive with Gummy Sharks but also seemed to fit the subject matter and overall feeling I wanted this painting to have.

Gummy Sharks

I’ve been inspired by the Pantone card painting videos I’ve seen online to start painting on colored surfaces. Specifically, to paint on some left over color aid paper I have from a college class. This is the first of many monochrome paintings I plan on doing. I chose the color aid sheet in the color B-S1, a bright almost cerulean blue. My paint pallet consisted exclusively of black, white, and ultramarine blue which I used to create an image of gummy sharks in a more painterly style.
