Much like painting portraits, I love makeup and fashion because it’s fun to push the boundaries of appearance. It’s amazing to me how much different colors and shadows play in creating new shapes and effects. Whether I’m painting my face like a blank canvas or trying to do a more traditional makeup look, I like experimenting to see what kind of new things I can come up with.
Stitched a Mask of Confidence
This faux mask of makeup was inspired by Nikki Tutorials’ video where she attempts the same effect. This was my first attempt at doing makeup for a more creative purpose other than daily wear and I was very happy with how it turned out. Even by using basic products like eye shadow and foundation, I was able to create a sort of illusion in which shadows and highlights make it appear like I’m wearing a mask instead of painting my face.
Painting Like Bob Ross On My Face
Once again inspired by Nikkie Tutorials, among many others online, as well as a specific Bob Ross Painting, titled Horizons West. This time I had access to face paints as well as my standard makeup supplies. This look felt more like painting on a canvas as I tried my best to ignore the natural contours of my face and simply create a painting on the space I had. I then accented the painting with things like orange lipstick and glittery eye shadow to solidify that this painting was in fact on my face and in some ways, a portrait of it’s own.
Starry Eyes
This was my attempt at face painting for daily wear. I took inspiration from my t-shirt which is of course in the style of Van Gogh’s Starry Night. I started like I usually would with eye shadow and then layered on top of that with face paint. It turned out a little muddier than I had hoped but I still enjoy the idea and may attempt to recreate it a bit better in the future.
An Experiment with Color
This look was inspired by the image of Hayley Williams I painted on the sweatshirt pictured above. In the reference photo Williams was wearing a blown out rainbow eyeshadow look and I wanted to experiment with that style. I usually stick to a very specific process for my makeup, even if I am using bright colors. But this particular image inspired me so much because it seemed to have no structure, it was just a lot of color. It was definitely different for me and the color placement definitely alters the shadows of my face but I’m happy I tried it and I’d like to experiment with more styles like this in the future.
Noel
Inspired by the song Noel by I Don’t Know How But They Found Me as well as the frostbitten Elsa makeup look by Glam&Gore, I created this look. By the end of the song, Noel is said to be found, presumably after facing an unfortunate end. I tried to tell a bit of a story with this one, illustrating the songs lyrics while creating my own version of the character.
